In my experience, many people experience some nervousness when coming to my clinic for their first chiropractic adjustment. This is understandable, as a chiropractic appointment is different enough from a doctor’s visit to feel strange and unfamiliar. In this article, I will provide an overview of how chiropractic adjustment works—that way, you can be more at ease when you come see me at Dr. Lester Chiropractic.
Purpose of Chiropractic Adjustment
The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to relieve pain and restore the range of motion to a joint. One of the most common applications of chiropractic adjustment is to relieve back pain—by manipulating the spine, chiropractors like myself can bring the spine back into proper alignment and reduce any pain you are experiencing.
How Chiropractic Adjustment is Conducted
When you come to my clinic for chiropractic adjustment, I will have you sit or lie in a position where I can access the area affected by pain or stiffness. For spinal adjustments, I will most likely have you lie down on the chiropractic table, but for joint adjustments, I might have you sit up. Then, I will use my hands to apply pressure to the affected area, moving the affected joints to improve their alignment. In most cases, I’ll use a firm thrust to adjust your joints, but when necessary, I will decrease the pressure and velocity. I will do all I can to keep you comfortable throughout and to ensure you feel no pain and only minimal discomfort.
